CHESTER is a finalist for the Great Town title at the 2010 Urbanism Awards.

The city is just one step away from being voted this year’s ‘best town’ in the UK and Ireland following a nominations dinner in Gateshead, where it was picked as one of three finalists out of a shortlist of 10 possible candidates.

Chester will now go head to head with Cambridge and Scarborough for the Urbanism Great Town award, with judges visiting all three locations over the summer before the all important vote.

John Thompson, chairman of The Academy of Urbanism, said: “Urbanism is all about learning how a strong sense of place can improve our communities and our quality of life.

“Like all our finalists, Chester is an example of good urbanism at work. The competition is tough, but we look forward to the awards ceremony.”

The Urbanism Awards publicly recognise the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments.

Last year’s Great Town winner was Richmond, North Yorkshire.

The Academy’s members include industry-leading architects, planners, engineers, developers and designer.

Other categories at the awards include European City of the Year, Great Neighbourhood, Great Street, and Great Place. All five winners will be announced at the annual Urbanism Awards ceremony at Church House in London’s Westminster on November 20.
