Chester MP Chris Matheson enjoyed breakfast at Cherry Grove Primary School in Boughton during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Mr Matheson was entertained by children performing a school play about the challenges faced by tea farmers.

Education services company CDEC - Developing Global learning worked with youngsters from Oaklands, Sutton Green, St Bernard’s Catholic Primary, Winnington Park, Helsby Horn’s Mill and Cherry Grove primary school on Fairtrade projects between February 29-March 13.

Olive farmer Mohammed Hamada and director of Fairtrade organisation Zaytoun Taysir Arbasi also visited Chester and attended a bread making session at Wesley Church Centre in St John Street, Chester, before giving a talk.

Two Fairtrade fundays at Chester Grosvenor Park included a colouring competition, writing Fairtrade limericks and chocolate and food tastings, donated by Divine, and The Co-operative.

The children at Guilden Sutton CE Primary School celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight by dressing up in Fairtrade colours and taking in Fairtrade products.

Pupils went to school with bananas, tea, coffee, chocolate, biscuits and items bought from And Albert, the Fairtrade shop in Chester, including wooden recorders, cushions, trinket boxes and even a model plane.

Teacher Theresa Rainford said: “We all had a fantastic day and the children continue to be Fairtrade aware and recognise the part they play in supporting the farmers to get a fair price all over the world.”
