A HILLSBOROUGH justice campaigner from Chester’s online petition success has won backing from her MP.

Stephen Mosley has shown support for the e-petition created by Anne Williams, which calls for a new inquest into Mrs Williams’s 15-year-old son Kevin, who died in the 1989 stadium tragedy where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

The petition to the Attorney General gathered more than 116,000 signatures, meaning the issue can be debated in the House of Commons if enough MPs back it.

Mr Mosley is now gathering cross-party support for the issue, which is likely to be debated in the backbench business committee on Tuesday.

Mr Mosley said: “It’s fantastic news that the petition got so many signatures, and all within the space of a week, helped by sportsmen Kenny Dalglish and Wayne Rooney.

“I had a meeting with Anne last Friday and I will be putting a case to the Attorney General.

“We have to demonstrate there is cross-party support for this. Last October there was an MPs’ debate on Hillsborough, where I spoke about Kevin Williams’s case, and there was plenty of support then.

“There are a lot of things coming forward, including the Hillsborough independent panel which will publish its findings in May, so I think great leaps have been made.”

Mrs Williams is calling for a new inquest in a bid to overturn the original inquest’s verdict of accidental death.

The coroner in the original inquest imposed a 3.15pm cut-off point for all the 96 who died, a ruling Anne disputes as she says she has evidence Kevin was still alive at 4pm.
