MOTHERS’ Union member Jeanette Appleton from Chester got up at 5am and started to bake 1,000 cakes to raise funds and awareness for the organisation’s world wide project work.

Among the projects she wanted to highlight was one in Ethiopia which provides cooking pots for families arriving in the refugee camps from nearby Sudan.

Jeanette baked the 1,000 cakes using just bowls, spoons, knives and forks, in keeping with the utensils that the women use in the refugee camps.

Thanks to Radio Merseyside the event was widely publicised and people, from all over the Wirral and as far afield as Chester, came to buy the cakes throughout the day.

More than £1,000 was taken from the sale of cakes, donations on the day and via Jeanette’s justgiving webpage.
