A CHESTER man has avoided a prison sentence for possessing and sending indecent images of children on his mobile phone.
Jeffrey Rean, 23, of Newton Hall Drive, received a three-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for owning 11 indecent images of male children, and sending six more to Lee Tidwall, of Cornwall.
Rean was also placed on a sex offender programme and is to be supervised by Cheshire Probation Service. He must also report to the police of his whereabouts for seven years.
One of the images Rean sent to Tidwall was ranked as a level five category image – the worst category of indecent photos, with another ranked at level four.
Chester Crown Court heard Tidwall had been arrested last year and sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment for possessing indecent images, although it was accepted Tidwall’s charge was more serious.
Rean had no previous convictions and was said to be a hard-working young man with a great academic record, who was ashamed at what he had done.
He accepted the risk of prison and was terrified at the prospect of it.
Passing sentence, Judge Roger Dutton said possession of indecent images was a serious criminal offence, made more serious when it is transmitted from one person to another.
He added: “None of the photos could be regarded as acceptable in society.”
