CHESTER’S jive dancers stepped out in style in a competition held at the Guildhall in Watergate Street last week.

The intermediate-level competition was the first of its kind organised by Blitz Jive, which runs twice-weekly dance classes in the city.

Ashley Maddock and Andrea Hilditch took top prize of £200 and a gleaming trophy; in second place were John Dixon and Chloe Young who won £100; and Phil and Karen Edge took third place and a £50 prize.

They all received medals and weekend passes to the UK Modern Jive Championships in Blackpool.

Other finalists were Billy Smyth and Sharon Wyatt, Sarah White and Rachel Steel and Dave Williams and Elle Jaques.

The competition was organised by Blitz franchisee holder Steve Ledsham and his partner Paula Chalinor. "It was a huge success," said Steve. "The response and the interest we had was unbelievable.

"We organised it because of the interest our dancers have been showing in the UK Championships at Blackpool. This gave them a chance to gain experience in competition work, in working out dance moves and choosing costumes.

"None of them knew what music they would have to dance to beforehand so they had to be versatile. It was good experience for them to compete in front of a live audience.

"The standard of dancing was excellent and a real credit to all the dancers and their instructors.

"It was also great for the audience to see what standards can be achieved through practice."
