A CHESTER gas worker climbed the tallest mountain in Africa to raise thousands of pounds for a children’s charity.

Andrew Unsworth from Chester joined a team of 34 British Gas employees on the trek which saw the team climb 19,340 feet above sea level to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trek which raised more than £140,000 for children’s charity Make a Wish marked the end of a year long fundraising effort by British Gas employees for their charity of the year, bringing them to a grand total of £340,000.

Phil Bentley, managing director at British Gas, said: “Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro has been a fantastic and challenging experience for everyone involved and has produced a great result for the Make a Wish foundation.

“Last year we pledged to raise £250,000 for this incredibly worthwhile charity, and I am delighted that we have exceeded this target by more than £90,000 thanks to a huge effort by all our employees.”

British gas employees across the UK raised money for the charity through charity bike rides, sponsored skydiving, raffles and a World Cup event.
