A former Bishops’ Blue Coat CE High School student will travel to Cambodia in February next year to work with a Christian relief and development charity.

Becca Thomason, 18, will support a project that tackles poverty, run by the charity Tearfund, for six months, before studying English literature at university.

Becca said: “Together with my team I’ll be teaching English in local schools and raising awareness in the community of human trafficking. This is an opportunity to use our combined skills to work alongside Tearfund’s partner, the Cambodian Hope Organisation(CHO) and support them in the work they’re doing to combat poverty.

“I’m going with a team of four other girls, three of whom live in different parts of the UK and one lives in the Netherlands.

“The project I’m working on aims to support families, working together with community leaders, in this town on the Thai border which is infamous for its gambling industry. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and make a difference where it’s needed most. I can’t wait to go.”

Becca has had to raise £4,800 to take part in the project.

Becca added: “Fundraising has been interesting so far. As a family, we have sold unwanted household items on ebay, including some of my old Polly Pocket doll sets which were sent to Australia, and a chimney cowl!

“Also, through our church, HBC Chester, we are doing a number of fundraising activities which include growing bedding plants for sale, holding a Cambodian-themed fundraising evening and making Christmas cards and gifts to sell.”
