Smoke is billowing across Chester as a fire is being tackled at a storage warehouse in River Lane in Saltney where a major blaze broke out a year ago.

In the past hour today (Wednesday, May 13), North Wales Fire Service has sent four appliances to the scene to deal with the blaze which has been spotted by people from all over the city as smoke clouds dominate the skyline near the Chester-Flintshire border.

North Wales crews on site confirmed the fire, which is now being brought under control, broke out among waste materials in a storage warehouse at Lancashire Fuels 4u in River Lane where a major blaze took place in May 2014.

A firefighter at the scene said today the blaze was 'not serious' and that the damage was mainly caused by smoke rather than flames.

At the height of the May 2014 incident, 30 firefighters from eight different crews were at the scene pumping water from the River Dee to deal with the fire and damp down the building which was heavily damaged.

Some crews remained at the warehouse more than a week later, and were called back in June after the recyclable waste began smouldering again.

The 2014 fire resulted in legal action being taken against the firm and its directors and is currently due to be the subject of a court hearing later this year.
