DEVELOPERS backing a student village for 2,500 occupants have welcomed the council’s decision to support the principle of such a scheme.

Bell Developments are pleased with Cheshire West and Chester Council’s move away from piece-meal development of student housing to the concept of a dedicated campus.

But the council has already pointed out the Bell scheme, on fields between Blacon and Mollington, is inappropriate being in green belt.

Director Mike Bell said: “There are clear indications university growth has brought substantial

economic benefits to the City of Chester and the associated increase in student accommodation has had a major impact on Chester’s community areas.

“The current piecemeal approach to student accommodation provision has in many situations not helped with the community life.”

Mr Bell suggests Bell’s Student Village plan offers a solution to managing this continuing expansion.

“It will provide good quality purpose built accommodation for circa 2,500 students enabling student migration from the city to the village.

“This will not only allow Chester’s traditional communities to re-establish themselves and for students to be housed in appropriate accommodation but will make available much needed city centre accommodation which can undoubtedly be put to better use,” he added.

A council spokesman said: “Whilst the council supports the principle of a student village or campus, it must be clearly stressed that any individual application will be considered on its merits and strictly within planning regulations.”

The next consultation about the plans takes place at the Dee Point Centre on November 8. For more details, visit: www.chesterstudentvillage.co.uk or call 01924 876 876.
