MORE work needs to be done in Chester to really entice budding cyclists to make use of the city’s routes, following Team GB’s Olympics success.

That is the view of Chester Cycling Campaign’s Simon Brown, who says ‘there is a long way to go’ before Chester, a former cycling destination city, has the same infrastructure as places such as Oxford.

Mr Brown said: “The sooner we get away from the idea that cycling is a marginal hobby then everybody benefits.

“I was disappointed to see, for example, that the only way to get road speed limits changed is through a local councillor, which can be a costly and time-consuming exercise.

“You only have to go on the St Martin’s Way ring road to find it’s very intimidating as cars go through there at 40mph and you would never go along there again.

“Things are getting slightly better but there needs to be whole culture change like in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.

“That is why I am part of the Chester Cycling Campaign and trying to encourage others to support cycling in the city.”

Team GB notched up seven golds in the velodrome, with Bradley Wiggins adding to his Tour de France win with gold in the men’s time trial race.
