Hundreds of Cestrians made a big splash on a giant water slide in Chester city centre this weekend, in the name of two worthy causes.

The very first Chester City Slide attracted crowds of people to Lower Bridge Street yesterday to raise funds for both the Countess of Chester Hospital’ s Babygrow Appeal and Tarporley -based Transformation for Veterans.

Four hundred fun-seekers were given the opportunity to get wet on the 100m shute, having entered a £2.50 online ballot - of which £1.50 went towards both charities.

The event, organised by Wrexham-based Expedition Wise, proved so popular that many participants were eager to have a second go on the slide, including those who had taken part because the charities held a special place in their heart.

Beth Kenney and Georgia Oliphant who took their lilo in tandem and both dressed as babies to show their support for the Babygrow Appeal said they had the ‘best time ever’ on the slide, and Carl Horton- Leigh whose son Edward was cared for in the Neonatal Unit described it as ‘amazing’.

Lesley Woodhead from the Babygrow Appeal said it was hard to say at this stage exactly how much money had been raised but added: “We are extremely grateful to Expedition Wise for setting up such a brilliant event and also want to say a big thank you to everybody who took part, especially our ‘VIP Sliders’ as they have been raising sponsorship for the Babygrow Appeal.

“To date we have raised over £1000 but know this will this increase as more sponsorship money is paid in.” said it was hard to say at this stage exactly how much money had been raised but estimated it to be more than £1000.

Joe O’Connor from Transformation for Veterans, said: “The event was fabulous and professionally organised by Expedition Wise. Thanks also to Dee 103.3 who provided great music which added to the ambience of a fantastic fun day.”
