A FORMER state nursery in a city centre building dating from Victorian times is to reopen as a private nursery.

Peter Dentith, owner of Headstart Nursery in Upton, who lives in Mickle Trafford, has bought the former St Mary’s Nursery School, St Mary’s Hill, from Cheshire West and Chester Council for about £400,000.

Headstart-on-the-Hill nursery is expected to open in September once renovation works have been carried out to the building and garden and after receiving Ofsted registration.

A Headstart spokesman said: “We will be providing modern facilities incorporating stimulating and exciting resources/play areas for all age groups from 12 weeks up to five years old.

“We will also be registered to provide before and after-school care for local schools and a holiday club during school holidays.

“As with Headstart in Upton, all our staff will be trained to a high standard possessing childcare qualifications and will have attended current courses relevant to the care, well-being and safety of children in their care.”

All catering will be prepared on site and fresh meals will be served to children where all diets will be catered for.

The company’s mission statement is to provide ‘excellent childcare facilities in a safe, nurturing and homely environment’.

There has been a school on the site at St Mary’s Hill since 1846. The council nursery school moved to Handbridge in January 2009 after St Mary’s was closed due to a restructure by Cheshire County Council.
