PROTECTING Chester from the unacceptable face of alcohol-related crime and disorder is the aim of an initiative which has been launched in the city.

Chester has become the first ArcAngel-protected city in the county, marking the success of the 36 premises that are part of the initiative.

ArcAngel is a standards based approach to tackling alcohol-related crime and disorder which aims to drive up the standards of the nightlife in the city.

At the event balloons were released to signify Chester becoming the first protected city and non-alcoholic cocktails were served.

In attendance at the event were Assistant Chief Constable Janette McCormick, Chester MP Stephen Mosley, councillors and the licensees who have worked to achieve ArcAngel accreditation.

Inspector Ian Thorpe said: “All the premises involved have reached a minimum set of standards to be accredited with ArcAngel status.

“Each of the premises will have to retain these standards to stay accredited. There are still some premises that are hoping to become part of the initiative which is a positive step for driving up the standards of Chester’s nightlife.

“ArcAngel is a long-term partnership approach which involves Cheshire police, Cheshire West and Chester Council and licensees.

“Tackling alcohol related problems such as anti-social behaviour is a priority for all the agencies involved, the local residents and the premises themselves.

“The partnership is focused on making Chester safe for everyone. We all have a part to play and our message is clear to anyone coming to the city.

“Licensees are enforcing standards as are the police and council in relation to the sale of alcohol and they need to be aware that they have a part to play too.

“Anyone whose behaviour is considered to be breaking the standards will be dealt with accordingly, as paramount to the ArcAngel protected city status is providing a safe environment for everyone.”

The council’s executive member for community and environment, Cllr Lynn Riley, said: “When partnerships really work well together, initiatives like ArcAngel are the result.

“This really is a win-win for the city, its residents, businesses and visitors and the agencies that work hard to ensure that Chester remains one of the best cities in the UK.”
