In what has become known as 'Bauble-Gate', Tory group leader Cllr Mike Jones suggested on Twitter the council leadership had instructed contractors in Chester to add red baubles to the traditional white lights that straddle the city’s streets.

This is what you had to say on the matter on our Facebook page:

Tessa Burgess: What do I think of the new Christmas decorations? Honestly. I think it’s still bloody October!

Michelle Johnson: It’s about time there was some blooming colour on them. I like white lights, but they have been like that in Chester for too long and it is boring. Also, one does not associate Christmas baubles being blue and red is more Christmassy. If it were up to the Tories, the baubles would be black saying ‘bah humbug’ and “if you are on minimum wage or below and you are celebrating Christmas you are obviously getting enough to live on.” On second thoughts, if it were up to the Tories, Christmas would be scrapped for all except the wealthy.

Linda Clixby: Whats Christmas Decorations got to do with Politics ????

Joanne Tarbuck: How stupid to bring politics into it,I personally think it adds a bit of colour.

Catherine Clayton: I think they’re festive... I don’t think blue when I think of Christmas!

Lorraine Roberts: Red is Christmassy, that’s all I see the baubles as, nothing more or nothing less! I get excited every year when I see the lights being put up.

Beth Kennedy: This is without a doubt the most OUTRAGEOUSly hilarious thing ever. I knew the red man on the pedestrian crossings was up to something.

Caroline Bithell: Isn’t red festive why does everything have to be over read.

Sharon Wallace: Totally agree, I mean its not like we have EVER seen red baubles at christmas before.....Do they have nothing better to do.

Matt Bray: Get a grip tories it’s only bloody Christmas baubles #barhumbug.

Angela Black: I think it must be a labour conspiracy, I noticed that the pedestrian areas in the market car park were painted PURPLE and YELLOW that must have been to make Tories vote UKIP during the election. All I have now is a picture of Mike Jones sitting at home in a tin foil hat.

Phil Bazley: red is a christmas colour, what next will the tories find santa offensive because he is dressed in a red suit, idiot tories.

Sammy Payne: Red baubles!!!! Ooooooh I’m suddenly brainwashed and now I have to vote Labour! Have a bloomin word! The last I knew red was a traditional Christmas colour as is green. Sadly blue hasn’t quite made the cut unless you stick Elsa Starflakes up from the flim ‘Frozen’. If Labour’s manifesto was written on each bauble in gold glitter then I’d think things might be a tad dodgy....but they’re not, so shut up. Plus tweeting ‘@S***Chester’ is highly unprofessional

Matthew Fazey: Why is Mike Jones still such a prominent figure in Cwac tories? Even the leader of the Tories in Cheshire East think he’s passed his sell by date.

Bevanie Robinson: If he’s so opposed to the colour, why do so many Tory MP’s wear red ties?

Georgina Millington: Really!! Because I for one alwayss choose who I vote for according to Xmas baubles displayed in chester! Twaddle!

Sharon Pugh: They look lovely and I’d never look at anything pretty and think of politics. Only ugly things remind me of politics lol.

Helen Williams: How pathetic! Red is a Christmas colour, Mike Jones has a very vivid imagination!

Brenda Carden: Crikey I’d never thought about this, I saw a red steam loco on Saturday at Chester station, and there’s still red telephone boxes about, there’s red on that clock, there’s red everywhere: it’s all a plot: aaarrrggghhh.

Judith Tomkinson: Is this man really serious!!!

Carina Conde: I’m from Portugal and we use red ball there, don’t think Labour want to invade Portugal.

Jill Houlbrook - Quite a few red faces over this one! Maybe we should stick to politics!!
