Shoppers visiting Chester 's Grosvenor Shopping Centre from tomorrow (Friday, October 28) may need a cold shower as a fine art collection goes on display inspired by the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy backed by the author herself.
The exhibition is being unveiled at Castle Galleries, St Michael’s Row, created by world-famous fashion photographer turned fine artist Raphael Mazzucco who brings his unique interpretation to the racy subject.
Four new limited edition works have been created by Mazzucco featuring photography overlaid with elements of collage and iconic phrases from the books.
All are individually hand-signed by the artist and Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James, who was heavily involved in the collection’s development.
Each piece has been produced in an edition of 125 and is available to purchase for £995.
Mazzucco has created iconic images for some of the world’s best-known brands over his 20-year career, including Ralph Lauren, Victoria’s Secret and Guess Jeans. Deciding to swap the camera for canvas six years ago, Mazzucco’s arrival onto the art scene has been met with widespread critical acclaim.
He is famed for his mixed media works which are strongly inspired by the female form and celebrate sophistication and sensuality, sharing common elements with the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.
Raphael Mazzucco said: “Fifty Shades of Grey is recognised as a worldwide cultural phenomenon and its influence is felt across the globe.
“My work very often includes an element of writing; often it’s words that come to me while I’m creating, sometimes song lyrics, sometimes poetry. It was therefore so natural to me to take the language of Fifty Shades of Grey and work that into these images. The process of translating the written word into a visual concept was incredibly enjoyable, and it’s so rewarding now to see the finished presentation.”
The images have been published by Washington Green, a leading fine art publisher, in collaboration with Choice Fine Art and Clampett Studio Collections.
Asked about the work, Fifty Shades author EL James said: “I am thrilled to be involved with this project and to be working with an artist as inspired and original as Raphael Mazzucco. He’s brought a tremendous passion and lust for life to his interpretation of Fifty Shades.”
Frances Woodhouse, gallery manager for Chester’s Castle Galleries, which sells Mazzucco’s work in the UK, commented: “The delicately seductive appeal of this collection draws upon the captivating narrative of EL James’ Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy to produce images as delicate as they are striking. Beautifully presented in a monochromatic mixed media composition, they represent the creative meeting of minds between Raphael Mazzucco and EL James.”
