One of the giant arrows pointing the way to Chester’s market could be placed inside the building - to direct shoppers who get lost on the way in.

The £3,800 over-sized signs were removed from the Town Hall Square last week after being torn from the ground during the latest vandal attack.

Now, despite Cheshire West and Chester Council reassuring residents they would be back, there is still no sign of the arrows appearing out of their protective storage being referred to as 'council custody' on social media.

The arrows, one of which is described as having a 'dented point', were ripped out of the ground in a vandal attack last Tuesday (February 3) - with the desperate culprit even pulling up the flagstones in their bid to get their hands on them.

Now the authority have told The Chronicle they are planning to meet with market traders on Wednesday, February 11 to discuss the future of the arrows, and one could even be placed inside the Forum to point disorientated shoppers towards the market.

The arrows in CWaC custody

"We are having a meeting with the market traders tonight (February 11) to decide the long term arrangements for the arrows," a spokesperson for CWaC said, saying that some people come into the shopping centre by the staircase at the back.

"We may place one outside and one inside the Forum."

CWaC had promised to put the arrows back in place by Tuesday (February 10) morning, after taking them into storage following the latest vandal attack just metres from the police station.

But the arrows have remained under lock and key sparking reactions on social media, with some people saying they were a 'waste of money' and demanding to know how the attack happened so close to the city's CCTV hub.

The council say they are reviewing CCTV footage.

The signs have proved too tempting for pranksters - who pointed them towards the sky just days after they appeared in the city in January - leading to CWaC bolting them to the ground.

On Monday (February 9) we revealed that Cheshire West and Chester Council are planning to only bring the arrows out during daylight hours.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “They will still be out there during the day, but as of Tuesday, February 10 staff at the Forum will be bringing them indoors of a night and putting them back in the morning.”

The signs sparked mixed reactions when they were installed after we revealed CWaC spent £3,800 on them.
