A lorry driver has been taken to hospital following a multiple vehicle collision in Chester this morning (Tuesday June 23).

The male HGV driver was conveyed to the Countess of Chester Hospital after the accident on the A51 Tarvin Road, Tarvin Bridge, near Boughton, which happened about 7.30am. Cheshire Police say it is 'not clear what the driver’s injuries are at this stage' but he may have experienced a medical episode at the wheel.

However a spokesman from Mansel Davies, the company he worked for, said the 52 year old driver had suffered a stroke. The spokesman said he had 30 years driving experience, adding: "Thankfully no one else was hurt."

Police have confirmed other male drivers in a Seat Ibiza, a BMW car and a Ford Transit van, plus a male passenger in the Transit, were all taken to the Countess with minor injuries. A second male van driver involved in the collision was uninjured.

Motorists were earlier asked to avoid the Boughton-Vicars Cross area after the A51 was closed during the incident but the vehicles have been removed from the road which has now reopened. The closure led to congestion as it happened in the middle of the rush-hour.
