OLDER residents are enjoying high quality living standards at a redeveloped retirement home.

Chester & District Housing Trust spent £3.9m enlarging and redesigning Wain Court sheltered housing scheme in Rake Way, Saughall.

Previously called Wain House, the complex had contained 23 bed-sit units for the over 55s but the Trust made a commitment to remove bed-sit accommodation as it is considered no longer fit for purpose.

The redevelopment comprises 28 two-bed apartments and nine one-bed apartments for the over 55s. Four of the two bed units are fully wheelchair accessible.

Available for rent, the homes use renewable energy technologies. Wain Court was officially opened by tenant Beryl Edge, 85, who had been a tenant in the former Wain House before the redevelopment.

The scheme had originally proved controversial because it involved the demolition of five nearby bungalows owned by the housing trust occupied by elderly people who were upset at the changes.

The trust says the tenants were all given the option of being rehoused which most chose to accept and were compensated.
