A RELATIVE of a 107-year-old woman who frightened off burglars says she is ‘still poorly’ in hospital.

Gladys Hewitt, from Huxley, is currently recovering in Tarporley War Memorial Hospital following her ordeal at her home on Saturday, October 1.

The two male intruders were scared off by Gladys, who was in bed at the time, after she shouted at them and pressed her Life-line button to alert the authorities.

The traumatised 107-year-old then set off with her walking frame to get her grandson who lives nearby but fell by her garden gate, cutting her leg.

An X-ray at the Countess of Chester Hospital confirmed there was no break, but daughter-in-law Adele Hewitt says the bruising is causing Gladys a lot of pain.

Adele, 79, from Tarporley said: “She’s up and down, she’s still poorly. It’s bad enough at our age but when you’re 107 it’s 10 times worse.”

She reiterated that her mother-in-law would never return to her home.

“She won’t go back. She’s saying to us ‘I don’t know where I’m going from here’. It’s so sad,” Adele explained.

“We’ve had lots of support. Lots of people have rung, everyone has been shocked by what happened.”

Police are probing a linked burglary in Malpas about 9.10pm the same evening when a couple in their 80s were confronted by three male intruders, who continued searching the house even after they had been disturbed. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.

A third linked burglary happened in Wrenbury, near Nantwich, about 8.10pm on Saturday when an elderly couple were confronted by two males who again continued to search the property despite being disturbed. A small amount of cash was taken.

Witnesses who may have seen any people or vehicles behaving suspiciously in the Huxley and Malpas areas on the evening of Saturday, October 1, should call Chester CID on 0845 458 0000.
