SCHOOL children across Cheshire West and Chester are tucking into a cracking new menu after their Easter break.

The new menu includes several new homemade dishes using free-range eggs. Recent changes in buying procedures, has meant the swap to the chicken-friendly eggs could be made.

Principle catering manager for schools in Cheshire West and Chester, Donalda Williams said: “We currently buy around 4000 eggs per week so the switch to free-range makes a big difference and shows our commitment to animal welfare issues.

“The extensive new menu includes homemade egg custard.

“A nourishing school lunch helps children prepare better for afternoon lessons and the days of soggy cabbage and lumpy semolina are definitely long gone.”

John Stephens, Director of Children and Young People’s Services added: “We’re very proud of our school meals service. Cheshire West and Chester Council served an amazing 3.2 million school lunches during its first year. I’m sure we can encourage even more parents to switch from packed lunches to school meals. The new menu provides a great opportunity for children to try new, healthy foods with their friends.”

The school meals catering service offers a two-course menu, with a daily choice of two main course meals, plus a freshly prepared pudding or fresh fruit and yoghurt. The four-week rolling menu also includes milk, water or fruit juice.

School lunches are great value for money, especially when you compare the cost of a putting together a packed lunch and the time taken to prepare it and clean up afterwards.

If you are entitled to family benefits your child might be entitled to a free meal each day. Ask at your school office for more details. More information about school meals can be found on the council’s website.
