A bank receipt for £6,000, a car battery and a gas cylinder were just some of the finds Saughall Rotary Club volunteers came across during a tidy up campaign for The Queen’s 90th birthday.
The 20 volunteers, members and children from Saughall All Saints CE Primary School collected more than 20 black bin bags of rubbish during the Clean Up for The Queen
More than 50 other litter pick events took place across Cheshire West and Chester as part of the national campaign.
Her Majesty will celebrate her milestone birthday in April with her official birthday celebrations taking place later in the year.
Cheshire West and Chester Council organised various events with key partners throughout the borough, including at Stanney Woods, Ellesmere Port; Handbridge and Blacon, Chester; Winsford Marina; Greenbank, Northwich and Sytch Croft playing fields in Neston.
Alun & Deeside Mark Tami MP also joined a group of local volunteers, which included workers from Costa Coffee on Broughton Retail Park, cleaning the streets of Bretton.
Cabinet member for community and environment councillor Mark Henesy said: “Clean for The Queen is about everyone working together to give the country a big spring clean ahead of Her Majesty’s birthday and people across Cheshire West and Chester came out in force to support it.
“It was good to see so many people braving the rather unpleasant weather to do their bit and support our events. Council staff also volunteered to help with a community project to clear a passageway at woods in Elton.”
Clean for The Queen campaign director Adrian Evans said: “On behalf of the campaign, I would like to say a big “thank you” to Cheshire West and Chester Council and the people who live in the borough for supporting Clean for The Queen.
“They have been part of a campaign that has seen a million people stepping out of their front doors to make a difference to the way places look in every corner of the UK.”
The campaign, backed by organisations including the Women’s Institute, the National Trust and the RSPB, and anti-litter charities such as Keep Britain Tidy and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, was the biggest community-led clean-up the country has ever seen.
National celebrations to honour The Queen’s birthday include:
May 12-15: The Queen and Members of the Royal Family will attend a pageant celebrating The Queen’s life to be held at Home Park in Windsor Castle.
Friday June 10: The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will attend a National Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Saturday June 11: Her Majesty accompanied by Members of the Royal Family will attend at The Queen’s Birthday Parade on Horse Guards Parade.
Sunday June 12: The Queen will attend the Patron’s Lunch, a celebration of Her Majesty’s patronage of over 600 organisations in the UK and around the Commonwealth since 1952. For more information visit http://www.royal.gov.uk/
