A SOLDIER serving with the Cheshire regiment in Afghanistan died in hospital yesterday evening after being wounded in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

He was killed in an explosion while on patrol with the 1st Battalion, The Mercian Regiment, on July 13.

The unnamed soldier was treated before being flown to the UK for further treatment.

He died in hospital last night surrounded by his family.

Major Ronnie Goodwin, officer commanding rear operations group 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire), said: “The soldier gave his life trying to improve the lives of people in Helmand by providing much needed reassurance and security.

“He will be missed and remembered by all ranks of The 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire).”
