Cheshire Police is warning motorists of heavy rain expected across the county tonight (Wednesday December 30) with the advice to allow extra time for journeys.
Police tweeted the message on a day when Scotland and Northern Ireland took the brunt of Storm Frank with thousands of homes left without power, together with widespread flooding and landslides.
A Met Office forecast had originally included Cheshire West and Chester in a yellow rain warning for today but this was later downgraded.
However, the possibility of any rain remains a worry for people living in low lying areas in the Lower Dee such as Farndon , Aldford , Pulford and Eccleston where a flood warning remains in place from Shocklach to Chester .
And there were strong winds last night and this morning with reports of trees blowing down on roads including the A56 at Hapsford.
Cheshire Police tweeted: “Heavy rain expected across Cheshire tonight. Allow extra time for your journey with difficult driving conditions #StaySafe.”
Earlier, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service echoed a similar warning by tweeting a serious message with a humorous twist.
The service said on Twitter: “The weather outside is dreadful! If you don’t have to go out today we think you should stay in and finish off those Christmas chocolates!”
A BBC Weather report for the North West this evening and tonight states: “Rain, heavy at times will continue through the first part of the night. After midnight rain will clear to leave a chilly end to the night with clear spells and showers. Winds will strengthen toward dawn.”
