A laser pointed at the cockpit of a plane as it flew over Runcorn towards Liverpool John Lennon Airport has prompted a warning from Cheshire Constabulary.

A green laser was shone at the aircraft, which went on to land safely, at around 9.30pm on Wednesday (March 2).

Insp Mike Evans slammed the 'irresponsible and idiotic' behaviour, which he explained can have potentially serious consequences for passengers and crew.

“Similar cases have been successfully prosecuted and those found guilty of participating in such behaviour are liable to a term of imprisonment," he said.

Such incidents taken very seriously

An airport spokesman said the issue is not unique to Liverpool.

They said: “Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the airlines that operate here and the police all take these incidents very seriously due to the potential safety implications of such foolish activity."

Now police are keen to trace those involved with the incident.

Anyone with any information should contact Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident number 973 of March 2, 2016.
