Social media has gone nuts about the story of the naughty squirrel who jumped into a woman's handbag and refused to leave.

Dozens of people have commented on the bizarre story The Chronicle reported last week, which called for Cheshire police to intervene  after the woman became distressed in the incident outside The Shropshire Arms pub on Northgate Street last Thursday, which Sgt Andy Burrage from the force described as 'the strangest story of my entire career'.

He told The Chronicle: "I was approached by a member of the public saying that a squirrel had attached itself to his girlfriend and wouldn’t let go!

"I really didn’t know if this was a wind up or not so went into the CCTV room and sure enough could see that a very determined baby squirrel would not leave a lady alone and was nestled in her handbag!

"I promptly dispatched Detective Constable Nigel Thake to the rescue who was able to prise the squirrel away. However, on trying to release it then turned its affections to Nigel and wouldn’t leave him either!

"Thankfully, after a short while it did and happily skipped off up a tree in the Cathedral grounds.

"It was definitely the weirdest job in my 14 years of policing and definitely Nigel’s in over 20 years!"
