Staff from the huge M&S store at Cheshire Oaks have now raised £16,000 to support the Babygrow Appeal at the Countess of Chester Hospital .

Employees threw themselves into fundraising activities over the year, including taking the plunge on a zip wire, jumping out of planes and eating their way to wards the ‘fantastic’ total.

Ten daring staff travelled at over 100mph as they took on the longest zip wire in Europe in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park while another 10 plummeted 15,000ft as they jumped out of a plane over Whitchurch to raise vital funds for the charity.

In addition, seven employees took the heat in a food challenge, munching their way through the spiciest foot-long sandwich ever made using M&S products and all in the aid of the appeal.

Other activities included cake bakes, cycle challenges, car washes and bag packs.

The funds raised will go towards the Babygrow Appeal’s aim to build a new neonatal unit at the Countess on Liverpool Road.

Simon Layton, manager at the Longlooms Road store, said: “Everyone at our store has gone out of their way to raise as much money as possible for the Babygrow Appeal.

“The charity has touched many employees’ hearts and we’re delighted to be able to support their fantastic work.”

Lesley Woodhead, head of fundraising at the Countess, said: “We would like to say thank you to all the staff and customers at M&S Cheshire Oaks for their dedication and commitment to the charity and we are grateful for their fantastic fundraising.”

M&S says that each year, stores around the country select one local charity to support over 12 months hosting fundraising events with customers and staff.

M&S Cheshire Oaks has previously supported local causes including Ellesmere Port Women’s Refuge, The Guide Dog Appeal and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research following the store’s launch in 2012.
