STAFF from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are celebrating after hitting their target of delivering 60,000 Home Safety Assessments (HSAs) in the past year.

This target was achieved on the last day of the financial year, with a couple in their eighties receiving the 60,000th HSA to be carried out by staff.

The service signed up to achieving the target in this year’s corporate plan and is delighted to announce that the goal was achieved.

The couple, Lt Col David McLellan OBE DL and his wife Mary, of Brooklands Road, Goostrey, received the last HSA from fire safety advocates Alnoor Bhaloo and Lorna Thompson and had two smoke alarms fitted free of charge. They were also given valuable fire safety advice during the visit.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Cashin said: “Reaching this 60,000 target was the ultimate goal for the service for this year and hopefully brings us closer to our vision of zero preventable deaths in Cheshire, Halton and Warrington.

“HSAs combine advice on fire and other safety issues with the fitting of free smoke alarms.

“The service intends to carry out another 60,000 in 2009/10, while ensuring that 60% of these are from defined high-risk groups.”
