Stars of the women’s cycling world will descend on Acton Bridge on Sunday (April 26) for a national race.

The Cheshire Classic Women’s Road Race will boast a star-studded line-up of Olympic gold medallists Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, Joanna Rowsell, multi-paralympic gold medallist Dame Sarah Storey and current world and European gold medallist Katie Archibald.

Riders will compete for an increased prize fund of £3,000, which include the Delamere Dairy Sprint, Advanced Medical Solutions Team Prize and Your Sports Therapist Most Aggressive Rider competitions.

Organiser Andy Wood said: “It is an amazing line-up. However, I’m most proud of the prize fund we have available.

“Three years ago the total prize fund was £500; thanks to our amazing sponsors we have been able to destroy that.

“I’m delighted that once again the race has set the benchmark in raising standards for women’s cycling.”

The Cheshire Classic, which is organised by Weaver Valley Cycling Club, is the longest running event on the British Cycling National Series calendar, established in 1980.

Weaver Valley Cycling Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and boasts more than 150 members, including Tour de France commentator and former professional racing cyclist Paul Sherwen.

Riders are expected to travel from as far as Aberdeen and Cornwall to tackle 12 laps of the course around Acton Bridge.

The race will begin at 9.30am.
