Children from a Chester primary school proved they have what it takes to become Roman soldiers.

There was no skimping on effort from Year 3 and 4 pupils from Cherry Grove when they headed for a Roman-themed day out at Grosvenor Museum.

Not only did they have an action-packed day of activities at the museum, the children marched all the way from the Great Boughton school to the city centre - and back again!

During the day they enjoyed finding out about Roman coins, archaeology and Roman fighting techniques including the battle tactic known as the tortoise.

After their adventure, the children returned to the classroom and were challenged to write a newspaper report on their experiences.

Chronicle executive editor Michael Green was invited to judge the entries and decided the best of an impressive bunch had been written by eight-year-old Ciara McNicholas.

Her prize for winning the competition is to have her story printed in full in The Chronicle:

Roman Rush-Around! by Ciara McNicholas, aged eight

On Friday, November 1, Year 3 and 4 children from Cherry Grove Primary School went on an exciting trip to the Grosvenor Museum.

They had been learning about the Romans and were keen to find out more.

First they learnt about all the things that happened at Roman funerals- it is very sad when people die. They also looked at real grave stones from that time and what they meant.

Then they moved on to something much happier: It was all about how Romans lived. They spotted some circles and got very curious. In the end they figured out that it showed how big and small coins were in Roman times.

Next they went upstairs and spent some time with an Education Officer to do some activities. They tried being archaeologists and were spectacular at it! Munch, munch then it was time for lunch.

After their lunch they tried on armour and somebody accidentally wacked Brendan in the eye. “Ouch!” said Brendan, thinking that there had to be an easier way of getting a free tea towel!

Then they went marching around Chester in their new armour and did Roman stuff. They even learnt to do the tortoise!

Finally they went marching back to Cherry Grove Primary School after an action-packed day! On the way they thought about all the facts they learnt from their trip.

The Year 3 and 4 children would like to say a massive thank you to the parents and people at the museum who helped make this trip the best!
