A RESCUE organisation is asking Ellesmere Port animal lovers to support mistreated greyhounds.

Greyhound Rescue West (GRWE) of England is a registered charity dedicated to the rehabilitation of abused and abandoned dogs.

All require homes but some need costly ongoing medical treatment, and extra love and care to help them get over the neglect they have endured.

Last year, across the country, the charity found permanent new homes for 480 animals. Ninety of these were from Cheshire.

The charity holds 'meet the public' events in the area, the most recent of which was in Port Sunlight, when interested people came along from Ellesmere Port.

This resulted in a new home being found for one dog.

The latest Cheshire dog looking for financial support is Freya, currently living with a foster family near Warrington.

She is believed to have spent the first two years of her life shut away and being physically abused.

She is still too frightened to let strangers touch her.

A GRWE spokesman said: 'We are asking you to consider sponsoring this very special girl.

'To sponsor Freya for a year we ask for a donation of just £12.

'Sponsoring her would make someone a unique Easter gift and will ensure she receives the warmth and comfort she so richly deserves for the rest of her life.'
