Jim Scarborough, originally from Mount Magnet, Western Australia but now living in Ellesmere Port, was running the Chester Half Marathon for Rebuild Malapascua, a charity set up to help rebuild homes on Malapascua Island in the Philippines after it was hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

Jim is trying to raise at least £1,500 to help set up a clinic to provide care for the locals, most of whom don't have access to any medical care.

She has run two half marathons this year, to raise money for a nursery school in Tanzania where she volunteered last summer.

The nursery is in one of the poorest areas of the city Moshi, at the base of mount Kilimanjaro, and the school has nothing.

The money Stephanie has raised so far is going to pay for ingredients and equipment  to feed all 30 children porridge every morning. She would also really like to also pay for the teacher to receive some teacher training, but hasn’t quite got enough to do that  yet.

She said: “The teacher is a fantastic woman who loves all the children dearly and was definitely put on this earth to teach, but she has never had any training.”

Aidan Fitzsimmons, 29 a car sales executive from West Kirby

Aidan Fitzsimmons’ mum was given six months to live but sadly only made three weeks.

Aidan, 29, said: “This run meant so much to me after losing the biggest part of my life. I had a goal to raise £2,000 and I did it by using the JusGiving page and always promoting it on Facebook.”

  • Deputy headteacher of Bishops’ Blue  Coat CE High School Peter Coates ran the Chester Half Marathon to support his daughter Bethia’s fundraising efforts.

Bethia, a former Bishops’ pupil, is taking part in a 1,000km sponsored cycle around Holland to raise funds towards the building of a new university at her college, the Nexus Institute for Creative Arts in Coventry.

He said: “I asked people who wanted to sponsor me to donate instead to my daughter Bethia’s current 1,000km sponsored cycle around Holland which she completed last Friday, May 23. The new university will be home for many future students wanting to study music, media and the arts in a faith-based environment.”
