KIND-HEARTED golfers took to the greens in pouring rain to raise more than £16,000 towards providing new sets of wheels for disabled children across the region.

More than 150 sports fans flocked to Helsby Golf Club to join golfers as they teed off to raise money for the club’s Powered Wheelchair Appeal.

Despite the pouring rain children, parents and grandparents hit the course enjoying rounds of golf, raffles, auctions and a 300 bottle tombola to raise money for the appeal, which has already seen the club donate more than £1m to local disabled youngsters.

The day raised more than £16,000 towards the appeal, which also saw the charitable group, who were named last year’s Champion of Champions at the Your Champions award ceremony, present their 300th powered wheelchair to a local youngster in just 30 years.

TV star and actress Emma Cunniffe, who has been seen in programmes such as Clocking Off and Great Expectations, helped present the five new wheelchairs to the youngsters, with the 300th going to nine-year-old Jasmine Beadles from St Helens.

Organisers of the club thanked all the businesses and community groups across Frodsham, Helsby, Chester, Ellesmere Port, Widnes and St Helens who have supported them across the years by providing donations and prizes.
