A GOVERNMENT minister has officially opened Ellesmere Port's new jobcentre.

Jane Kennedy, Minister for Work, unveiled the purpose-built Jobcentre Plus in Mercer Walk in the Port Arcades on Friday.

Joined by borough MP Andrew Miller, she toured the office and met employers, jobseekers and staff.

Miss Kennedy said: 'Since its launch in 2002, Jobcentre Plus has played a significant part in achieving the lowest unemployment figures for 30 years.

'We're also extending employment opportunity more widely, helping those such as lone parents and people with disabilities get back into work.

'With an excellent, flexible service tailored to meet individual needs and new technology allowing access to over 400,000 job vacancies, Jobcentre Plus has already made a big impact throughout the area. I am confident the Ellesmere Port facilities will capitalise on this success.'

Mark Wilson, district manager for Jobcentre Plus Cheshire & Warrington, said the Port premises mark a major improvement in the service.

He said: 'Customers will be able to visit one location for finding jobs and receiving benefit advice.'
