HUNDREDS of people turned out to see the new Christmas lights in the city’s Garden Quarter last Friday.

Garden Lane was closed off for the switch-on celebration, which included entertainment from pupils of Chester Blue Coat Primary School, The Cambrian Queens and local singers.

The lights were switched on by one of the neighbourhood’s oldest residents, 100-year-old Frances Hill.

The centenarian said: “This is a very special and proud moment for me. I am so thrilled and wish everyone a happy Christmas.”

The event included a fireworks display and community party in the Bouverie pub with Chester choir A Handbag of Harmonies and 12-piece band Safehouse.

Organiser Matt Baker said: “This was a tremendous launch to our Christmas celebrations, which continue this Saturday with the big Christmas market at St Thomas of Canterbury Church.

“It also reaffirms the wonderful community spirit which goes from strength to strength here.”

The new lights were provided with support from the University of Chester, Cllr Bob Rudd and contributions from local traders.
