REPAIRS to footpaths and driveways at Neston cemetery are under consideration.

The borough’s bereavement services say repairs have been requested “over a period of time” and work is now urgently required to several areas for the safety of visitors and users.

Councillors have been told although minor repairs have taken place, due to financial restrictions there are now frequent comments from funeral directors and visitors about the poor condition, of footpaths and driveways.

“It is important to note that a funeral cortege carrying a coffin cannot see where they are walking and will not see any tripping hazard until it is too late,” according to a report.

Having identified the problem and by not undertaking effective repairs, the council puts itself in a “very vulnerable position” and increasingly likely to be liable to insurance claims, say officials.

They are suggesting £20,000 should be made available in the first year to undertake the more critical repairs in the borough’s cemeteries and sums of £10,000 and £5,000 in subsequent years to complete essential repairs.
