LIVE music and a visiting clown greeted customers at Tesco in Helsby this week when the store celebrated the completion of an internal refurbishment that will provide extra space.

Team leader Gemma Darrock, who co-ordinated the event, said: “We’ve created more space for all our promotional stock.”

Building owners Brookhouse are working on designs to increase the store size by 50% with extensions to the side and upwards into the roof of the store, which opened less than three years ago on the former BICC site at Mere’s Edge in Chester Road.

Plans were submitted to Vale Royal Borough Council last month but a decision on the proposed extension – which would provide another 187sq m to create improved storage areas to the rear of the store; an additional shopping area; customer cafe and improved staff areas to the elevation adjoining the car park and service yard – is not expected before October.

Brookhouse wrote to about 800 Helsby residents notifying them of the proposed development and invites them to view plans put on display at the village community centre.

It is understood borough council consultations will start next week and Helsby Parish Council also pledged to consult residents.
