A CAMPAIGN group is calling for an independent review of the so-called ‘hamburger’ roundabout with a halt to further development at Saighton Camp.

The People's Revolt Over Unsustainable Development (Proud) has started an online petition calling for an assessment of the Boughton Heath junction’s impact on surrounding roads.

Commercial Estates Group (CEG) was ordered to reconfigure the roundabout to cope with the extra traffic generated by its scheme for 375 homes, 5,500sq m of employment space and new community facilities at nearby Saighton Camp.

This followed a development by Taylor Wimpey incorporating 103 homes.

Proud is already worried about rising traffic levels especially on Caldy Valley Road/Chester Road which is the only route to and from Saighton camp.

And the group, which represents people from Boughton, Vicars Cross, Huntington, Christleton and Hatton Heath, opposes a new application for 295 homes on another part of Saighton Camp until the road and support network is in place.

Spokeswoman Helen Carey, of Delves Walk, off Caldy Valley Road, said: “We are not saying there should never be any development but we are saying there has got to be an adequate infrastructure.”

Mrs Carey, who has a 13-year-old son, Jack, said road safety concerns were upper most in parents’ minds but there were also worries about whether local schools and the drainage system would cope.

Proud would like a direct link between Saighton camp and the A55 but one cheaper suggestion is to install an exit route at the rear of the site, connected to the A41, so at least the traffic would not come in and go out the same way.
