CHESTER’S world-famous St Werburgh Street should be pedestrianised, according to a councillor.

The member for Newton, Cllr Adrian Walmsley, has put forward the idea in a notice of motion which goes before Cheshire West and Chester Council today (Thursday).

He said: “There cannot be many Cathedrals like Chester which has traffic going past just yards from its front door and boundary.

“Chester Cathedral is a key element of the One City Plan and St Werburgh Street pedestrianisation will give planners and developers maximum flexibility in which to prepare their proposals.”

He added: “This idea has nothing to do with a planning application for the Cathedral grounds which was recently turned down.

“My notice of motion, supported by my colleague Neil Sullivan, requests the directors of regeneration and environment and communities to work alongside Chester Renaissance to deliver a scheme that would remove vehicles from St Werburgh Street and introduce an alternative route.

“For example perhaps St John Street could return to two-way traffic and vehicles requiring access to the Grosvenor Hotel could turn left into Eastgate Street and there would be a turning circle outside the National Westminster Bank?

“Early morning goods deliveries would still be permitted and there would need to be alternative parking for Blue Badge holders who at present park opposite the Cathedral.”

However, Lib Dem Cllr Bib Thompson has expressed concern regarding the proposal. He said: “There is no mention of blue badge holders and what alternative arrangements can or will be made for this vulnerable group.

“I believe it would have been better had consultation events been held with all who have an interest in St Werburgh Street so all parties might work together to achieve the best possible outcome for all.”
