FUNDRAISERS were joined by a well known film writer as they presented a cheque for £5,000 to Clatterbridge Hospital.

Tim Firth, co-writer of Calendar Girls, opened the charity gala at Kelsall Primary School and funds were donated by the Clatterbridge Cancer Research Kelsall Branch.

The group of volunteers have raised more than £200,000 in recent years and organised the summer event as part of their latest efforts.

The gala included stalls, a six-a-side football competition for primary school pupils, a raffle and other attractions. It was well attended by local residents, clubs and groups.

A further £2,500 was raised during the event which will also be donated to cancer research funds.

Organiser Angela Harrop said: “Another successful event for which the Kelsall Gala Committee thank all who helped to organise the event, all who contributed on the day and all who attended to make the day a great success.”

The Kelsall Branch is in its 30th year. It was co-founded during the 1970s by Lilian Lightfoot who held a sale in her garden after her husband died of cancer.
