DRAGON slayer St George will be celebrated at the Alvanley Arms Inn today when the 400-year-old pub will be awash with red and white flags, bunting and English red roses.

The legendary man, often pictured on a white horse, will be welcoming guests outside the pub, on the A49, on horseback and anyone who quotes the phrase ‘by George’ with their order can claim a free pint of ale.

In the evening a selection of St George specials will be on the menu to celebrate some of the great food England has to offer.

Keeping diners on their toes will be a quiz where visitors to the Cotebrook pub can test their knowledge on all things English with prizes to be won.

While over at the neighbouring Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre visitors can also take advantage of the ‘By George’ offer, from 12noon to 3pm, to claim a free cup of tea. Younger visitors can also take part in the Centre’s Dragon Egg Hunt over the weekend (April 25-26) and take home some great prizes.

Landlady Janet King said: “The legend of St George is part of our heritage and should be celebrated. He stands for the English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry that our country has become famous for.”
