A LONG-RUNNING battle over where to site a new cemetery in Crewe has come to an end.

Development bosses have approved plans for farmland off Pym's Lane, ending a lengthy political row over the location.

Tory members of the borough council opposed the Labour board's choice of Pym's Lane, arguing that a site in the quiet hamlet of Crewe Green provided a more suitable setting.

As burial space at the town cemetery in Badger Avenue, Crewe, rapidly runs out, a decision had to be made.

Cemeteries manager Mary Slinn said: 'Work will begin shortly on the infrastructure of the new cemetery which will ensure burials in Crewe for at least another 75 years.

'The life of the existing cemetery has only been prolonged through the removal of some of the roads and pathways to allow for additional graves.'

Objectors to the scheme were concerned about the impact of cemetery traffic on Minshull New Road.

But planning officers were satisfied that the site, which borders both the council depot and Bentley Motors, was in as quiet a spot as possible.

One condition placed on construction work regards the existence of several main line sewage drains which cross the site.

Detailed blueprints will have to be drawn up to avoid digging drains directly over the pipes.
