RESIDENTS are being warned to step up their home security as police investigate a string of burglaries in Widnes.

Crooks have been targeting expensive items such as plasma TVs and jewellery over the past fortnight.

Phil Buckley, Halton's crime reduction advisor, said: 'These crimes have been in the late afternoon or evening.

'The criminals would have needed transport so if anyone saw any unfamiliar vehicles about, we'd like to hear from them.

'We'd also ask anyone who sees any suspicious activity in the next few weeks to give us a call.

'At this time of year, people are coming home from work in the dark, so we'd recommend fitting a time switch. Burglars will think twice before tackling a house which is lit.

'If you have a plasma screen TV, think about where it is set up.

'If it's easily visible from a window, it's an open invitation.'
