A NEWLY-QUALIFIED Royal Air Force officer from Bunbury is flying high after recently graduating from a prestigious military college.

Sam Winter,23, graduated as a flying officer from No 19 initial officer training (IOT) course at the Officer and Aircrew Cadet Training Unit at RAF Cranwell, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Sam joined 90 other cadets outside the historic College Hall to parade in front of Air Chief Marshal Simon Bryant, Commander-in-Chief Air Command. During the parade he was presented with the MacRobert Prize, awarded to the cadet who, during IOT, in the opinion of his or her peers has made the greatest contribution to the course.

After the parade he said: “I am extremely proud to have been commissioned as an RAF officer and cannot wait to get out on operations and serve my country.”

Sam, whose parents Francis and Joy still live at Bunbury, attended Tarporley High School before graduating from the University of Liverpool with a BA in ancient history.

He joined the RAF in November last year and will soon begin his professional training as a weapons systems officer.
