GOLFERS are protesting over shock plans to sell a parcel of land next to their course in Crewe.

Queen's Park Golf Club members were angry to see estate agent's details advertising the £2m sale of land at Queen's Park Drive.

The site, covering nearly three acres, is marketed as a prime location, with planning permission for residential use and next to a golf course.

The picturesque municipal course is owned by Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and managed by an independent operator.

Club secretary Dave Houghton said: 'We have only sketchy details at present but from what we can see the sale of land would include our car park, first tee and practice green and adjoining old tennis courts and bowling green.

'Without the green the course will be shortened, dropping it from four to three par and will become less attractive to golfers.

'Why do we have to lose facilities to build houses? The council should be looking to enhance leisure facilities around the course.

'We are frequently asked to take more exercise and there's a lot in the news about childhood obesity.

'The club offers coaching to young players and encourages them to enjoy sport.

'Perhaps the council should consider revamping the tennis courts to create another exercise facility instead of putting houses on them.'

The club is protesting in writing to Crewe and Nantwich MP Gwyneth Dunwoody - the club's president when it opened in 1985.

Borough councillors gave the go-ahead to the sale of the land earlier this year.

Council legal spokesman Chris Henshall said: 'Independent operators have given consent and are responsible for facilities provided at the golf course.'
