Five work colleagues from Chester-based Brio Leisure are taking the plunge to help disadvantaged people around the world.

Michelle Dutton, Hollie Connah, Jane Wedgwood, Lynne Roberts and Bev Pentland aim to swim 200 lengths of the Northgate Arena pool in aid of this year’s Swimathon challenge and in turn raise money for Sport Relief.

The Brio staff also hope to encourage other swimmers across Chester and surrounding villages to take part either as individuals or teams.

Community interest company Brio also has swimming pools at Christleton Sports Centre, The EPIC Leisure Centre, Neston Leisure Centre and Winsford Lifestyle Centre where fundraisers can take part in the Swimathon initiative between March 21-26.

Marketing officer Michelle Dutton said she hoped others would follow the Brio team’s lead.

She said: “It’s a fantastic way of raising money and has the added benefit of helping you keep fit too.”

Established in 1986, the Swimathon is a nationwide swimming challenge that encourages swimmers up and down the UK to swim a variety of challenge distances at their local pool and raise money for charity.

Over the past 27 years of Swimathon, more than half a million swimmers have taken part, raising more than £40m for charitable causes.

Entrants can choose from 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km individual distances.

Team swimmers can also form a relay squad to tackle the 1.5km and 5km distances.

Comic Relief spends the money raised by the public to give extremely vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and throughout the world a helping hand to turn their lives around.
