WORK on improving Middlewich's appearance is to be extended even further thanks to a gift from the police to Middlewich Clean Team.

Officers presented eight new high-visibility jackets worth £200 to team members which will enable them to perform their litter-picking andbulbplanting workinnewplaces across the town and in all weather.

PC Mike Senior said: 'The jackets mean that they can work on major highways in the town, adding to the excellent duties they already perform making the local area safer and better looking.'

The jackets were paid for using the Discretionary Officers Fund, a Home Office initiative for which Cheshire is a test force.

PC Senior said: 'They're the same jackets we wear when out working for the force, except they have Middlewich Clean Team rather than Middlewich police markings.

'It means that when the team are out working on major highways, they may even deter motorists from speeding through town, as the jackets will appear similar. Whether they do or not, we are delighted to have been able to help the team, which does an excellent job and is very well-liked and respected across the town.'

Clean Team leader Janet Chisholm said: 'We are absolutely delighted with this donation. They are superb jackets and it is very kind of the police to buy them for us. It is excellent that they have recognised our work in this way and we're thrilled to bits.

'We are very pleased with the jackets, as they will keep us warm in the winter and their breathable fabric will also mean we can wear them in summer.'

One area which may benefit from the Clean Team's newly-widened working area is Centurion Way, where a planting project is planned by the group.
