FRIENDS and family descended on a Widnes residential home to celebrate the birthday of one of borough's oldest people.
Elsie Yates who was born in 1901 marked her 103rd birthday with a slap-up Chinese meal on Monday night with staff from the home and a party was held to mark the occasion on Friday.
Elsie, who has been a resident at the Cartref Residential Home on Derby Road, Widnes, for the past five years, is still in touch with people she met and worked with during the First and Second World Wars and still takes part in the residents' meetings at the home. She enjoys general knowledge quizzes and bingo.
Sheila Gilroy, home manager said: 'Elsie is one in a million, a lovely lady who is still independent and knows what she wants. We all want to congratulate her on her 103rd birthday. Maybe the secret to her long life is that she is always happy and positive.'
