STREET cleaners welcomed a new recruit to their ranks as part of a survey on Crewe grot-spots.

Borough councillor Roy Cartlidge swapped his day job as a railway man to join Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council's Blitz Team.

The team has been set up by the authority to provide a quick response to environmental problems including litter, fly-tipping and graffiti.

Cllr Cartlidge will report his findings to the local economy and environmental committee.

He said: 'No family should have to put up with rubbish, litter, graffiti, and abandoned cars. I know residents put a lot of effort into keeping their homes and gardens clean.

'I want the council to do the same for our streets. I hope this effort puts out a clear message that the environment is top priority.'

The new service has been funded after consultation highlighted cleaner, greener, and safer streets as a priority for residents.

Cllr Cartlidge, who is Shadow Portfolio Holder for the Environment, is calling for tougher action against litter louts, fly-tippers and vandals.

He added: 'It isn't just about cleaning up litter and graffiti.

'More recycling, tackling climate change, fighting noise pollution and creating pleasant public spaces are all on my agenda.'
