CREATIVE pupils have been taking a hands-on approach to their history project.

Year 5 and 6 classes at Barrow Primary School have constructed Tudor warships and a life-size model of King Henry VIII as part of their studies into the Tudors.

The art project, led by Debbie Nolan who teaches twice a week at the Barrow Lane school, gave youngsters the chance to step back in time through using various materials and research techniques.

Headteacher Andy Ramsden said: “The juniors have been studying the Tudors. The school promotes active learning with a skills-based creative approach.

“As well as constructing the ships, the children researched books and the internet to find out about what life was like on board a Tudor warship and how the ships were constructed.”

Also in the build-up to World Book Day – which is celebrated today – pupils created puppets from their favourite children’s books.

Various classes have also been dressing up and coming to school as characters from their favourite books.

In addition, staff at Barrow sought revenge against the children after they were trounced in last year’s children’s books quiz.

Infant teacher Lucy Wainwright added: “We have had a very creative week at school with the project being led by Debbie Nolan. She was an art advisor for Cheshire so we are very lucky to have her in school two days a week.”
